Ku Li throwing his hat in the ring?

with 2 comments

The man has a vocation. And one must admire his tenacity and his life of service. How else can you explain the fact that he is throwing his hat into the ring one more time. Much has been made in our traditional media about his failed bid in 2004 but they’ve conveniently forgotten what that bid was about.

At that time, he almost knew he would lose. He staged the challenge to show UMNO that the call by the top leadership NOT to challenge the top two positions was not right. It was and is his belief that democracy within UMNO was something to be preserved and that the top two positions were never treated as ’sacred cows’ in the past.

Democracy within UMNO was something that was prized during it’s formation and into it’s recent history. Until the advent of Tun Mahathir.

Right now, UMNO is held in great distrust not just by the non-malays but also the malays. Ku Li feels that he can unite the party. Why else at 71 would he offer himself to “heal the party?” The man is independently wealthy and has no particular desire for personal monuments. And does not owe allegiance to anyone except his own conscience. You can’t say that of anyone else in the 2nd ranks of UMNO at present.

The man who set up Petronas and returned much of our wealth to the nation is back in the fray. And having a strong voice speak up at this time of confusion can only be good.

I hope people recognise his sincerity and his desire to rebuild. But he is certainly facing an uphill struggle against vested interests and major money politics.

From Malaysiakini – Ku Li to challenge Pak Lah for Umno presidency

Ku Li to challenge Pak Lah for Umno presidency Mar 19, 08 8:57pm

Umno veteran former vice president Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today said that he wanted to challenge Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the presidency in the coming party polls.

The MP for Gua Musang offered himself to lead Umno to “heal the party” which was in “a bad way”.

“I still have ideas, I am still brave because I am independent and I don’t depend on anyone. If my service is still needed and my strength can still be used, I am offering myself to work for the rakyat,” he told a press conference in Kota Baru today.

“Even though I am old but I am still strong. If there are enough nominations for me to contest in the Umno election, I will give my service if I am needed,” said 71-year-old Razaleigh.

Razaleigh had previously challenged and narrowly lost to then Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the 1987 party elections.

This subsequently caused a split within the party with Razaleigh forming a splinter group, Semangat 46.

He was later invited back into the Umno fold by Mahathir in 1996 when he dissolved Semangat 46 and brought back all its members into Umno.

In 2004, he tried to challenge Abdullah for the presidency but failed to obtain the necessary nominations. He obtained only one from his Gua Musang division.

Calling for Umno EGM

He is now planning to call for a special meeting in his division tomorrow to discuss his proposal for the party to hold an extraordinary general meeting to discuss the defeat.

He described Umno’s defeat in the recent general election as the most painful and horrible moment in his political career.

The Kelantan prince also recently sent a letter to all Umno divisions urging them to call for a special Umno EGM on May 11, the party’s anniversary, to discuss the dismal polls performance.

He felt the meeting should be held before the annual general meeting in August to “avoid confusion.”

“I felt the general assembly has to deal with lots of issues, so let us have this special meeting to discuss the election results. I hope the other Umno divisions will consider this.

“This can be done according to the party’s constitution and it is an abnormal thing. We need to discuss this defeat. Haven’t the Umno members realise we’ve lost five states? Are they still sleeping?” he said.
